Geocache Description:

Cache is a bison tube hidden on somewhat of an island in the Charles. You will need a boat and some agility along with sharp eyes to find and log this one, although it's easier than it's sister cache "A Boat Just Isn't Enough". Making the find and signing the log isn't for the little ones, leave them in the boat, and I would advise you bring a friend. Log only, BYOP.

For many in the Boston area the lakes region of the Charles is their first exposure to Kayaking or Canoeing. They rent a boat, the hop in the river and they head towards Waltham to float at the Moody St. Dam a bit before paddling back to the launch. It's not a bad way to spend a day since you see some interesting sights and you can pull your boat out of the water to spend some time on Moody St for refreshments before taking your time winding back up the lazy part of the river to your car.

For those that are willing to buck the trend and head up the river instead, willing to brave the rt30, Pike, and Pike/128 interchange bridges with all their noise and fury to see what is on the other side, there is a wonderful winding stretch of river that offers an experience that is just as rewarding as heading the other direction, if not more so because of a combination of lack of crowds and the fact that the river is more technically demanding on the paddler that it is in the other direction. To inspire people to head the direction less traveled I placed a cache worthy of the more intrepid in our midst. Similar to "A Boat Is Not Enough" this cache requires a boat, patience, sharp eyes, agility, and probably a friend.

Good news though - while you still cannot get to it without a boat (no matter what it looks like on the map...) you don't need to bushwack to the center of an island to get to it! It's right there... on the banks of the river. You just need to get out of your boat and get to the cache. Easy. Right? Maybe. Maybe not. You'll have to see when you get there. Brush up on your foliage so you can spot Stinging Nettles though. It wouldn't be a proper adventure cache if there were no local plants out to get you, right?

For an even more rewarding journey up this section of the Charles, or any section for that matter, there is a great book by a local author that covers the river from beginning to end and talks about the historical features along the way. I believe it's out of print now, but your library or paddling friends can probably loan you a copy. I highly suggest reading up before heading out so you're aware of the features you paddling by.

As always - enjoy the paddle and enjoy finding the cache. This area is beautiful in all four seasons so please take lots of pictures and post them with your logs so everyone can see them for motivation or for something to look at on days when we can't paddle ourselves.
