About the bike path
Experience the arid central Australian landscape in an enjoyable and different way along the Simpsons Gap Bicycle Path.
This sealed path meanders for 17 km through attractive bushland between Flynns Grave and Simpsons Gap. The path meanders cross-country with generally easy grades, making it a relaxing and scenic ride for visitors of all ages.
Easily accessible on the western outskirts of Alice Springs, the path is great for residents seeking a short ride after school or work or as longer weekend explorations. For tourists, it is a unique way to safely get to know and enjoy the natural environment around the town.
Vantage points provide panoramic views of the hills and ranges encircling Alice Springs. You see part of this ancient landscape as the path winds from creekside woodlands of River Red Gums, through Mulga and Witchetty Bush groves, to exposed rocky hills.
Cycling slowly and quietly enables close encounters with wildlife, particularly lizards and birds, usually seen in the early morning or late afternoon. The low light also makes this the best time to appreciate and photograph the changing contours and colours of the expansive MacDonnell Ranges landscape.
Eighteen information signs along the path explain aspects of the area's fascinating natural and scenic features. They are a great place to rest your legs and discover more about the path's surroundings.

The Cassia Hill Walk, near the path's western end, offers a break from cycling and the chance to learn about native plants. You are welcome to stop and enjoy your surroundings anywhere along the path from lunch in a sandy creekbed to clambering up a rocky lookout.
The cooler months from April to October are the more pleasant for cycling. For your own safety don't use the path in hot weather as heat stress can be dangerous, even fatal.
The path is open during daylight hours only as Simpsons Gap closes at 8pm. Camping is not permitted in the Park.
Getting There
Opposite Flynns Grave the path connects into the town bicycle path network, being a 7 km ride from the centre of Alice Springs. If this extra distance is daunting you can 'drive and ride', using the car parks at either end of the path.
How Much Further?
Adult cyclists of average fitness should be able to complete the one-way 17 km trip between Flynns Grave and Simpsons Gap in one to two hours. However, family groups or people seeking a more relaxed exploration should allow three to four hours for a full one-way journey. Plan your ride to suit your abilities, needs and the time available.
Detailed route information is on the map. Four small rest areas (with minimal facilities) located along the path are pleasant picnic stops or places to pause and appreciate the bush. They are found at 4 km (the Knoll), 4.5 km (Wallaby Creek), 8.5 km (Tea Tree Creek) and 12 km (Mulga Valley) west from Flynns Grave.
You can combine the path, Simpsons Gap and Larapinta Drive for a 27 km round trip. Larapinta Drive is a busy, high speed road and not recommended for family groups. A total distance starting from Alice Springs town centre, the bike path and return to town along Larapinta Drive is 41km.
Please note: The Roe Creek crossing is subject to flooding and can be sandy for 130 metres. Slow down as you approach the creek near Simpsons Gap and be ready to dismount.
What to Bring - Safety First
Drinking water is provided at two points along the track (3.5 km and 14 km from the start of the path). It is therefore wise to carry adequate drinking water supplies with you. A snack or picnic lunch will make longer rides even more enjoyable.
A helmet and sturdy footwear are essential for safe cycling. In the hotter months protect your skin, and lessen the risk of heat stress with sunscreen, a hat and loose-fitting cotton clothing.
The Plant and Wildlife Identikits are useful reference booklets that describe the plants and animals seen along the path. They may be purchased from bookstores.
Watch Out
Please pass other visitors with care and avoid collisions by warning them of your approach. Children should be closely supervised on the path at all times.
The best way to enjoy the path is slowly. Sharp bends, floodways, dips, crests and possible obstacles such as fallen branches and gravel make speeding dangerous. Don't risk a crash amongst the boulders - go slow! Take extra care when crossing culverts and on raised sections of the path.
Caring for the Environment
Please help protect the path and its surroundings for others to enjoy by observing the following GUIDELINES:
Keep to the path. This helps limit soil disturbance and environmental damage. 'Off-path' riding is dangerous, and you are assured of punctures from sharp sticks and large prickles.
Bins are not provided, so please take your rubbish with you.
Fires are not permitted.
All plants, animals and natural features along the path are protected.
If you see any trail bikes or other vehicles on the path please note their registration number and contact a Ranger.
Pets are not permitted in the Park.
Guns and traps are prohibited.
Take a bike pump and puncture repair kit.
