Geocache Description:

Yet Another Trail To Nowhere...

Alternate working title: Making Lemonade

As I was doing some caching today in this very industrial corner of the Bay Area - I was reminded of several things.

While the US economy may be attempting to transition from an industrial, manufacturing economy, to a knowledge economy - one thing is clear: We're still every bit as dependent on all those heavy, dirty industries as the underlying foundation which enables our society.

Yet, even here, there are signs of innovation: Nestled between Garbage Mountain and the Waste Water Treament Plant is a huge photo voltaic installation. Signage along the trail describes how the methane and other gasses that are by-product to the decomposing waste are actually capture, and used as fuel to power other 'recycling' processes, with the surplus being sold back into the grid.

That's what I call putting a green face on a dirty secret - and despite a few moments of 'dump smell' - I really enjoyed my walk out here. Maybe it's just because work has been so stressful, and just getting outside and walking, anywhere, is a much needed change of scenery. I really did find the winding waterways through the green grassy wetlands quite scenic: you just have to focus on your immediate surroundings.

I figured while I was doing the loop, I best explore the horn and see what the end of the line looks like. Just a couple of benches, and a fence. That said, it's the furthest you'll get from Garbage Mountain on this trail.

Cache container is something I grabbed @ Kaiser this morning while Baby Z was getting her latest round of vaccinations. While I may not have put it to its intended purpose - it is, in my mind, better utilized in its current capacity.
