Geocache Description:

Every park needs a geocache. This cache will also give you some knowlege of the local woods.

Eastern Red Cedar. This tree grows from Maine, northernmost Florida, South Dakota to northern Texas. It is very hardy and can grow in the worst of soils. It is first to grow up after fires clear the landscape. When the soils are good, it can grow to 65 or 70 feet high with trunks 12” to 40” in diameter. They are C3 plants that rely on naturally occurring CO2 levels in the atmosphere. The soil under the trees is very alkaline due to the needles. This is why the ground is barren under some trees. The berries are a favorite of the Cedar Waxwing birds. Seeds are digested in about 12 minutes and germinate 3 times faster this way then just dropping to the ground. I don’t know who did that study. Turkeys, bluebirds and some mammals also enjoy the berries.

The wood is very rot and insect resistant and is great for fence posts. It has a great aroma from all the oils in the wood. You will also find the wood used for cedar chests and closets. Moths hate the odor so it makes a great wood for storing clothes. If your cedar chest or closet walls do not smell as good as new, lightly sand the wood with very fine sandpaper and the aroma will return.

Congratulations to SABRESFAN13 for first to find!
