Geocache Description:

This Cache is one of the harder ones on the Island. It is a 20-30 minutes hike from where you can park your car. Good shoes are required and it is not recommended for kids as the last part of the hike is “off the trail” and there are very sharp rocks and holes in the “iron-shore” where the Cache is hidden. Also make sure to bring water, as it can get very hot during the day!

The idea of this Cache was to create a hiding place for especially big and/or a large numbers of treasures. The Cache is a big aluminum cylinder with an inside measurement of 6 inches in diameter and 18 inches deep, and therefore the biggest Cache on the Island. The treasure is hidden off the “Mastic Trail”, a beautiful trail that runs across the Island, and used to be the only way to reach the “North side” by land before the road was build.

You can park your car at the northern trailhead of the Mastic Trail (first waypoint), and then hike down the trail till you reach the second waypoint. On your way you will come across a number of Tamarind and Mango trees, so look out for some fruit (usually May-August) and for the local parrots that often come to feed on them. Also snakes can be seen occasionally, but don’t worry, there are no poisonous snakes on Grand Cayman, so you might as well try to take a good picture of them. When you reach the second waypoint it is time to leave the trail behind. It is only a short distance from here to the Cache, but be very careful from here on! This is very rough terrain and the rocks a very sharp and brittle. Also there are deep holes in some areas, so the best thing to do is to hold on to the trees and branches as much as possible to avoid falling on the rocks. Also make sure your GPS is charged as you can not see the trail from the Cache even though it is only a few steps away.

I hope everybody will enjoy this cache as much as I did hiding it. There is lot’s of room for great treasures in it, and it is strong and protected enough to ride out any hurricane! Remember to always leave an equally, or more valuable treasure behind if you take one away, so this Cache will turn into a real “Treasure Chest”.
