Geocache Description:

My father purchased this island in 1972 and sold most of it to the Cruise Ship company around 1990. We kept five acres and built a house at the high point of the island. Here among the coconut palms is where we pitched our tents in 1979, often stringing them between two of the trees. Tent City was our first settlement on Little Stirrup Cay. Many of those original palms have washed away, but they keep re-seeding themselves so the legend of Tent City will remain immortal.

Email us the number of coconut palm trees over 10 feet tall that you can see from this spot. An approximate number is fine.

Coconut palms are constantly reseeded as coconuts drift from one island to another. This shallow side of the island is a natural collector of such floating debris. The shallow sand flats are also teeming with sea-life. At low tide you can see some emerged sand bars often filled with sea birds picking off the small crustaceans and plant-life. The tidal swings are quite large, 3.5 feet (1 meter) in the vertical direction, which means a lot of sea weed and debris is washed ashore at each high tide. The cruise-ship personnel do a good job of cleaning the beach every few days. Without them, the dead vegetation would start to rot attracting a lot of insects and making a generally unpleasant mess. In 1979 I spent a summer on the island (before we had any permanent structures) building a water tower and this was our camp. We certainly had beach-cleaning on our weekly chore list!
