Geocache Description:

This is the first in a series of caches placed near to old Railway Stations in North Yorkshire. Unfortunately most of these stations have long since ceased to operate, however some of the old station buildings have survived.

The line opened in 1875 and closed to passengers in 1931 but remained open as a goods train service in 1963 when it was closed completely. The station consisted of five sidings which two of them served a brick goods shed and a substantial goods yard.

Masham station was part of the Ripon to Masham line which ran through Melmemby, Tanfield and arriving at Masham. This line never attracted many passengers/freight however Masham was still convient for the nearby Jervaulx abbey, Swinton Park and the nearby Hackfall woods.

Nowadays the main station has been largely unaltered but has been turned in to a private residence. The goods shed have been fully restored and now serves as a picture gallery and a café with the grounds serving as a popular campsite.

The manager of the campsite is aware of this cache but please beware of other muggles

This campsite will be providing the base for ourselves and JollyJax event which will be held here on 15th-17th June 2012. There will be some new caches put out for this event. A tour around the local brewery, a BBQ on the Saturday evening and most importantly a chance to meet and greet other cachers and talk about the good, bad and ugly caches
