This cache is dedicated to Nibs, one of SA’s unsung heroes. He has an obvious appreciation of the country caches, especially those involving a scenic walk or an historic theme. Characteristically, his own caches reflect his predilection for a quality caching experience.
Nibs’ appreciation for excellence is clearly portrayed in his logs. For example, in Alex’s “Chirp” he wrote:
The Stanleys put me onto this one at a recent meet ‘n’ greet at Stirling. Needing something to do today, I decided that this cache sounded like it could be worth the effort, and besides, I have yet to do one of Alex’s caches that I haven’t enjoyed.
I had to do the cache the ‘old fashioned way’ since I couldn’t get so much as a squawk out of my GPS, and certainly no chirps. But I think that this may have been a bonus as I certainly got to see more countryside, and it made the track direction decisions that much easier as I was led along the trail.
The final location was stunning on this cool summer’s day. There was just enough water in the creek to produce the sound of running water (if you got up close and listened hard enough) and the bird calls in the bush provided the perfect serenity .
I took nothing but put in one of my pathtags. Thanks for a(nother) great cache Alex. This one’s a keeper.
And his obvious and admirable distaste to the apathetic (in response to a brief log on another fine cache)…
Presumably you don't live at Wilpena Pound so you must have driven up there past much of the rugged beauty of the area. I also presume you weren't choppered into the cache location, so you would have had to have walked in through the small gorge and seen the historic relics of the pioneering past, before climbing up onto the rim of the Pound and surely gazed in awe at the vistas there - and all you feel you can say is "TFTC"!
My god! Why do we even bother?
Some time ago, BantamCT and I met Nibs during a day of caching in the southern suburbs. Our paths crossed several times and we stopped for a chat each time to exchange notes and hints. Young Bantam took an immediate shine to Nibs, and to this day, at each subsequent cache visit, we rifle through the logbook searching for the characteristic Nibs stamp.
This cache is placed within a small cairn adjacent to a shallow railway cutting over alkaline calcrete soils. These ‘rail reserves’ have become important ‘corridors of biodiversity’ in an otherwise ‘fragmented’ rural landscape. At this particular locality, the mallee, Eucalyptus gracilis provides shelter for numerous understory plants including various wattles, Acacia spp. and the dry-land tea-tree, Melaleuca lanceolata. The ground is a mosaic of lichens and mosses and the leaf-litter a refuge to countless species of invertebrates, many yet to be discovered. Enjoy the mallee in its subtle beauty, and Happy Hunting!
