Science and Butterflies Multi-Cache
Vanessa H: Hello
I am archiving this geocache because the Winchester Science Centre will be a pay-to-park site. Also, the Science Centre no longer runs the associated schools workshop thus, no longer supports it. As I am moving out of the area, I can no longer maintain this.
I'm glad so many enjoyed the activities and hope that a geocache can be located on the Butterfly Reserve at a later date.
Thank you,
Vanessa

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
This is a multicache where each stage has a mini science experiment for you to complete.
It is recommended that you do them in order for a nice walk, and take a pen.
Everything in the cache boxes is required for the science experiments so please NO SWAPS until the bonus cache and don't take anything from the caches until the bonus cache.
The bonus cache is full of swaps and a special prize for FTF. It can be found at:
N51 GA.FB(C+E),
W001 EB.(D+E)(B+C)F
The walk takes about 1 hour in total, and goes around Magdalen Hill Downs, a butterfly conservation area. Please respect the butterflies by keeping dogs on a lead and stay on the paths. All caches are within 5 metres of a path.
The coordinates above are for the first stage. Parking is available at the Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium. This is free parking outside of school holidays, is rarely full and the Winchester Science Centre have given geocachers permission to use it. Please check the Winchester Science Centre website for more details about parking.
More information about the downs:
Fifty years ago Magdalen Hill Down was open, grazed downland famous for Adonis Blues. Much of it was then ploughed-up for arable cultivation and the steeper slopes left to invading scrub.
By 1989 the butterflies were greatly reduced, but our scrub clearance and grazing management has carefully restored the site into a haven for wildflowers and butterflies once again.
The original reserve has been extended twice (mid 1995 and 2004) by taking on large neighbouring areas of arable land. On these chalk grassland is being very successfully re-created through sowing with native grass and flower seed from other Hampshire sites.
This work, supported by a Higher Level Environmental Stewardship Scheme and Hampshire County Council, is restoring the former glory of this important downland and allowing butterflies and moths to establish healthy populations again.
At the top of the reserve are several Bronze Age Round Barrows, listed as Scheduled Ancient Monuments.
