Geocache Description:

This traditional geocache is located on the peak of mount Profiti Elias (Prophet Elias) 500 meters above sea level and 1 km north of the village Tholopotami, in the center of beautiful Island of Chios.

At the summit is the small old church of Prophet Elias, and an array of communications antenna towers and a fire watch tower. The cache is a peanut butter container with a geocaching declaration note inside in both Greek and English, and is hidden among some rock outcrop on the north-west side. Off course included is a log book, pencil, sharpener, and also I put in a Greek Komboloi and a small toy car.

The intent is to bring the geocacher to this spot to experience a spectacular panoramic view of most of the southern part of the Island and identify over 20 villages, the airport, as well as a large part of Asia Minor and on good visibility the Islands of Ikaria and Samos. Binoculars strongly recommended!!!

The cache is accessible from a cement paved side road winding through a young pine forest to the top, either by car, scooter or 20 minute walk. There is no road sign so be careful not to overpass this small road, you will see some gates they are never closed. On your way up stop to take pictures and depending on the season you can see the butterflies and honeybees feeding on the wild thyme.

Tips you might want to know.
-The fire watch tower is manned from mid-May to mid-October from 7AM to 10PM, so do not get startled, its either a man or a woman, they are friendly and you can ask them to go on the tower.
-It gets quite breezy at the top, most welcome at summertime but off season you might want bring extra clothes.
-On July 20th every year the locals celebrate the day in honor of Prophet Elias, by attending the morning mass and then with festivities of food, drink, music and dance until dark, what the Greeks call "panigiri" or festival. So if you happen to be there join in.

Enjoy the cache!!
