James Bond author Ian
Flemming spent some of his writing career living in St. Margaret's,
Kent. Over time he developed several connections with the locality
and these influenced parts of his bond novels and short
stories.
Flemming used the
section of cliffs between St. Margaret's and Kingsdown as the
setting for his novel Moonraker.
“….”Sir Hugo's expecting you
sir. It's the big house up in the woods there.”
He pointed to some lights a hundred yards further on towards the
cliffs. Bond heard him telephoning to the next guard point. He
motored slowly along the new tarmac road that had been laid across
the fields behind Kingsdown...”
“It certainly is a
wonderful day down below here...Those crowds on the distance by the
coastguard station will be getting quite a sunburn, there must be
thousands, what's that you say? Twenty thousand, it certainly looks
like it and Walmer beach is black with them too. The whole of Kent
seems to be out. Terrible crick in the neck we're all going to get
I'm afraid – worse than
Wimbledon...
