Hwy 7 runs from the Louisiana border, through my hometown of El
Dorado, all the way up to the northern end of the state to Diamond
City on Bull Shoals Lake. And the awesome Arkansas River crosses it
right here. And with the railroad tracks below, I can't help
but feel connected to the far corners of the state when I stand
here and survey the horizons, imagining the roads and the waterways
going on and on and on. It's no wonder the NGS said, "Let's put a
mark right here, where the river meets the road."
The cache and benchmark are located on the Russellville side of
the bridge. Do not attempt access from Hwy 7; there is an access
road that goes under the bridge.
The railroad below is not active, although there is ample
traffic. Be careful in your ascension and decent from the cache, as
this is moderately steep terrain and can get quite slick after a
rain.
Benchmark FG1171
is located just southwest along the guardrail from the cache,
embedded in the concrete at waist-to-knee level. Coords are
618/861.
