Known locally as "Pylon Road" Campbell's Mill Road is administered and maintained by the Kapiti Coast District Council as a walking, mountain biking, and horse riding track.
The road was originally constructed in 1945 by Harmen Campbell, a mill owner who was granted cutting rights to log the western side of what is now the Akatarawa Forest Park.
Kapiti Island and Raumati South from upper section of Campbell's Mill Road
Starting at Maungakotukutuku Road at 210m ASL the road climbs with a gentle and steady gradient for it's 5.5km length until it reaches the Akatarawa Forest at 380m ASL.
It is hence the much preferred option for access to the western side of the Akatarawa forest for walkers and MTB'rs, and provides some great views on the higher section of the road.
There is some parking at the start of the track (where the cache is) but please do not block the roadway as it provides ROW access to adjacent landowners and service vehicles.
In addition to encountering such authorised vehicles users of the road also need to be wary of grazing stock, they have not jumped the fence, they are there to keep the grass down!
No need to break out the mountain bike for this one however, the cache it is placed at the start of Campbell's Mill Road and is a nice easy park'n'grab for those in a hurry.
