Geocache Description:

This cache is a great way to start your hike and geocache adventure in Arroyo Verde Park in Ventura.

This cache highlights a delightful picnic area at the head of Arroyo Verde Park. With its sign "Hazle Snodgrass Picnic Area", my questions were (1) Who was Hazle Snodgrass? and (2) Why is this picnic area named after her? Not even Ventura Parks & Rec Department could remember why...

Well it took Hazel's grand daughter and fellow geocacher Nancy discovery of the cache to help set the story right. Hazel Snodgrass was a "giant" in the Begonia world and has a begonia named after her - Hazel's Front Porch. (Sorry but you won't find one of these beautiful plants at the picnic site.)

Nancy brought it to the attention of the City Parks department of the misspelling of the Hazel's first name and a new sign was installed in Sept-2012.

But how does that explain the picnic area being named after Hazel? When Arroyo Verde Park was established , her friends and family raised funds to have this picnic area installed and named in her memory.

TRIVIA QUESTION: What famous baseball player was Hazel married to?

ANSWER: Josephine (nickname Hazel) was married to Fred Snodgrass (born in Ventura, CA) who played center field for the New York Giants (1908-1915) and finished his career with the Boston Braves (1915-1916). Giants fans - both SF and New York - know the legend of Fred...

Fred Snodgrass will forever be remembered as the center fielder that made one of the most famous errors in baseball history. With the New York Giants holding a 2-1 lead against the Boston Red Sox, Snodgrass dropped a routine fly ball that put the tying run on second base. The Red Sox would eventually score two runs in the inning to beat the Giants and win the series. The error became known as "Snodgrass's Muff".

Exactly 100 years later (2012), the Giants — now located in San Francisco — were back in the World Series and hoping to avoid the kind of infamy that befell Snodgrass. The SF Giants won the World Series with a four game sweep over the Detroit Tigers!

BACK TO HAZEL....This cache overlooks Hazel's area and that should be enough of a hint but you get one more below. Cache is a log only container. Bring your own pen.
