The Camp Nelson Heritage Park is a 525-acre historical museum and park located in southern Jessamine County. Established in 1863 as a depot for the Union army during the Civil War, it became a recruiting ground for new soldiers from eastern Tennessee and escaped slaves, many of whom trained to be soldiers.
Over 5 miles of interpretive trails are open nearly every day from dawn to dusk. The trails and interpretive markers provide an oportunity to visitors to enjoy the lanndscape while learning about the significant role Camp Nelson played during the period of the Civil War.
The trails in the eastern part of the park changes from the flat, open spaces to running along the palisades that over Hickman Creek just before it joins the Kentucky River. The trails highlight many of the defensive features first constructed during the Civil War era.
You may notice a nearby parking area. Unfortunately, access is usually behind a locked gate and therefore the parking area in the western part of the park is your best bet.
CACHE
This appears to be the end of the trail for now. The path just disappears in a few hundred feet. A virtual "dead end". You will also notice that you are "walking among the dead" and in fact, you will have to get to know one of these poor souls rather well. The cache is a camouflauged, matchstick container with log only. As always, bring your own writing instrument.
