Umsizi: Hi The 4Gs

Due to no response after the request to maintain or replace the cache, I am archiving it to, stop it showing on the listings and/or to create place for the geocaching community.

The Geocache Maintenance guideline explains a CO's responsibility towards checking and maintaining the cache when problems are reported.

Please note that if geocaches are archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance, they are not eligible for unarchival. This is explained in the Help Center.

If the CO feels that this cache has been archived in error please feel free to contact me within 30 days, via email or message via my profile ,quoting the GC number concerned

Geocache Description:

A fun little multi / micro that you can enjoy - and that you can bring the children along to, to have a little fun around the cache. (Please note: This is NOT another children's playground cache). The cache covers about 200m, and while a little "climbing" will be required, it is very easy.
The site also "changes" with the seasons, so come prepared (wet, hot, reptiles, and so on :-)
The above co-ordinates will take you to 'stage one'

On 16 January 2008, a fire (suspected to have started by a cigarette) started on the southern end of the Fernkloof Mountains - under Rotary Way - and, fanned by a strong gale force wind, quickly become a runaway fire, burning everything in it's path along the south east face of the mountain. With Mountain Drive as a fire break on the one side, and the wind preventing the fire from going over the ridge on the other, the fire was left with a very thin corridor of "fuel" with which to fuel it's hungry appetite. However, within this thin corridor, 2 churches, a school, and a number of houses in Hermanus Heights were in dangers way. The community however banded together and working with the local emergency services ensured that these, at least, were not damaged. Sadly though, six old thatched-roofed houses in Westcliff were burnt to the ground when embers, carried by the wind, lit up the roofs, and with the emergency services already stretched, these houses could not be saved. Another tragic part of this (as with most) fire, was the number of reptiles - snakes and tortoises - who could not out run the flames and were quickly consumed.
Amazingly, the very thing that drove the fire on - the wind - was also responsible for it's death, as the fire was met head-on by the wind coming over Kanonkop down the Mussel River valley and pushing the flames backwards towards where it had already hungrily consumed everything in it's path.
This was not the first fire on these mountains, and it sadly won't be the last.

This cache represents the site, the destruction and the new birth - all part of the life cycle that is FYNBOS.
