Find and Sign a Water Tower Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Ngaambul: As there's been either no response from the cache owner, no cache to find or log to sign, or it's been a number of months since the last owner note. I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace/make available the cache sometime in the near future (next 30 days), just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the current guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it. Should you replace the cache after 30 days has passed please create a new cache listing so it can be reviewed as a new cache.

Geocache Description:

A camouflaged container, with room for some small items.

The Semaphore Water Tower, an imposing octagonal red brick tower with white dressings, about 18 metres tall and with walls tapering from a thickness of 2.1 metres at the base to 45 centimetres at the top, was built between 1878 and 1880 for the cost of about 5,000 pound. It was topped by a steel water tank that was 9 metres in diameter and 4.5 metres deep, and capable of holding 305,000 litres of water. The tank was protected from overheating by a system of false flooring and a wooden casing lined with sawdust. By 1915, water from Hope Valley was supplied direct to the peninsular via a water main on the new railway bridge and the tank became obsolete. After unsuccessfully seeking tenders for its demolition, the tank and land was eventually sold in 1936 for 210 pound.
In the 1940's, flats were built on the site and, in the early 1970's, it was converted into a rather eye-catching private residence.
