This is the third in a short series of caches which take the finder for a walk in the hills from the carpark at the Longwomans Grave. The next peak over from this one is its "Big Brother" Slieve Foye. Slieve Foye is the highest peak in the Cooley Mountains and the highest point in County Louth. There is an older cache on it's summit which is well worth the effort when you're this close
There are various trails throughout the mountains of ranging various difficulty levels. The Tain Trail is arguably the most popular and offers a 40km walk that begins and ends in the medieval village of Carlingford.
The trail is divided into four sections and each are tackled in half a day. The route takes the walker throughout this mountain range with spectacular views with Slieve Foy, the River Colptha, Ravensdale, Rockmarshall and Carlingford Lough all focal points of the walk.
The Tain Trail also allows visitors to see Carnawaddy, an ancient Neolithic burial tomb as well as various dolmens.
Apart from the Tain Trail hikers can also explore the range of mountains with the beautiful walk from Omeath to Carlingford one of the most spectacular anywhere in Ireland. The walk features many challenges for hikers with rivers, waterfalls and streams all to be seen en route.?
The cache is a small tupperware box containing a log and a pen (best to bring your own just to be on the safe side) From the carpark at the LongWomans Grave follow take the short path to the stile (waypoint added) From there you simply follow the trail (it's easy enough to follow with a number of yellow marker points to help you on your way) Off course if you prefer you can take the Route One approach
If you'd prefer a (much) longer hike you can pick up the start of the trail in Carlingford and go from there
While there are far more challenging hikes than this please bear in mind this is mountain terrain and make appropriate preparations (hiking boots, waterproofs, plenty of food and water, etc) As this can be a very popular area with walker please take care to replace the cache as you found it to protect it from muggling
