The Cat’s 8 Queen Challenge Cache. Please Note……. The Cache is not at the coordinates that are listed on the cache page. However, you should be able to park at this location. There should be a path near by that will take you to a trail. From there, proceed to the caches. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ****************************************************************************

The object to the “Cat’s Queen Challenge” is to place 8 Queens’s chess pieces on a standard chessboard so that each Queen can not be taken by any other of the seven remaining Queens on the chessboard. This eight Queens Puzzle is a mathematical inspired by the chess game and was originally proposed in a German chess magazine in a year of 1846. Many mathematicians have worked on this puzzle and have found a large number of solutions to this puzzle. I have used over 10 different solutions to test to see if I could make this interesting puzzle into a cache.

First, you need to print out the numbered chessboard. You will find this numbered chessboard in the Picture Gallery. Next place each of the eight Queen pieces on a numbered square so that the Queen cannot be taken by another Queen. After you have placed the eight Queens and you believe you have the solution that all the Queens are safe from capture, add the numbers under each of the Queen spaces. Now you need to add all eight numbers and subtract it from the posted .NNN and then add 176. This is your new .NNN. Next, you take the same number and subtract it from the posted .WWW and add 313. This is your new .WWW. Good luck and I hope you will enjoy this interesting Chess Challenge Puzzle. This cache also has a lot of nice stuff to start with. There may be even a small traveling Chess Set in the cache for the FTF. . ***

Warning

NOTICE: Please be respectful of the posted park hours. If you enter the park after hours you are trespassing. If you are stopped you can be ticketed or arrested and will put the future of geocaching in the parks in jeopardy

Special permission to hide caches in St. Louis County parks is NOT needed as long as the Groundspeak rules are followed. "Blanket Permission" has been worked out in advance with the park service. DO NOT CALL THE PARK as they cannot handle the calls. The Groundspeak cache reviewer does need to know exactly how and where the caches are hidden and what type of containers are used. The geocaching liaisons will notify the park service of new caches. Remember NO AMMO BOXES or PVC PIPE caches.
