Eliza Jane loved to walk along the towpath on the South side of the Erie Canal. She and her Grandmother lived nearby in a small cottage in Gastown.
Now that she was 13, as long as the weather was nice, Grandmother would let her walk along the towpath by herself. Of course Boots would walk with her, he was an old dog, but a good companion.
When the canal was quiet, all the animals would come out. If Eliza Jane and Boots were quiet too, they would see deer, fox, rabbits, hawks, blackbirds and a lot of squirrels! And there were still lots of fish in that big old Erie Canal. Once they were back home, Eliza Jane would practice her writing in a journal. Today she would write about the little frog that they had spotted sitting on a stone. He remained so still that Eliza Jane was close enough to almost touch his nose!
Today was special because the weather was so wonderful that Grandmother had let her bring a small sack with some bread and butter so that she and Boots could stop at the creek and have a picnic. Eliza Jane still thought of the water as being a creek, not a bustling canal. Why she was surprised that the frog had not been startled by a passing mule!
Please enjoy your visit to Eliza Jane’s towpath, bring a bicycle, bring a friend, bring a picnic, but do not come at night.
