Fifty-Mile Flat Traditional Cache

“Fifty-Mile Flat” was placed as an encouragement for all to get off the beaten path and get out onto the South Big Horn/Red Wall Scenic Backway where some of the most beautiful landscape in the West awaits.
Of course, caching along the way always enhances the fun experience. Before heading out to this cache you should first visit the Wyoming Highway Department web-site titled, “Backcountry Adventure On Wyoming’s Scenic Backways.” It provides a great overview of this region that includes the historic 33 Mile and Arminto Stock Trails, the Outlaw Trail, and the Red Wall area once frequented by the likes of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid along with the rest of the Wild Bunch and the Hole-in-the Wall Gang.
The eastern end of the scenic loop runs north from U.S. 20-26 on County 125, Bucknum Road. The western end of the loop runs north from U.S. 20-26 at Waltman on County 105.
This cache is north of the South Fork of the Powder River a few miles, in area that has been called the Fifty-Mile Flat. The WYDOT brochure describes the area: “Across the river the road traverses a feature called Fifty-Mile Flat and again the landscape changes. The road becomes a bit rougher, and ponderosa pines appear, sprinkled among the sagebrush. Interesting rock formations are noticeable in the area…”
The WYDOT site also provides very helpful travel tips for this area. But a word to the wise….this is truly a remote area, a 100 mile loop on dirt roads, often with no phone coverage, and very view travelers. There are no services. You could very well be ON YOUR OWN! Don’t even think about getting to the north end of this loop when the weather gets bad. 4WD is always recommended.
