Geocache Description:

Bolsterstone is a small village set on the hillside above Stocksbridge to the north-west of Sheffield, between the valleys of Ewden and the River Don. Unfortunately the village no longer has a Post Office or a school, but it does have a world-famous male voice choir. The school closed in 1993 and the building is now the Village Hall, where the choir rehearses.

Bolsterstone Male Voice Choir (BMVC) was formed in 1934 by some of the members of the village church choir with the help of the church choirmaster. Seventy seven years later, the choir is still going strong.

In October 1947 nine people (choir members and supporters) died when the coach taking the choir to the nearby Holmfirth Music Festival crashed. In 1997, a stained glass memorial window was dedicated in St Mary's Church, Bolsterstone, to remember those who died in the crash and to celebrate the Choir's achievements at home and abroad. If you would like to know more about the choir, you can visit their website at (visit link)

There is limited parking in the centre of the village, so I have suggested parking on Moorhall Road AKA Sunny Bank Road. Wheelchair users should park on Stone Moor Road by Waypoint 2 and will need help retrieving the cache itself.

Please note: Google maps puts Bolsterstone in the wrong place. It should be at St Mary's C of E Church on the map.

The published co-ordinates take you to the small square in front of the Village Hall. From here you can explore the village and find the answers to the questions you need to work out the actual co-ordinates for the cache.

Start at the information board by the village pump (Waypoint 1) in front of the old school (now the Village Hall).

a. Which Earl of Shrewsbury owned the Manor House?
b. What is the third digit of the year that the Village Hall (formerly School) was built?

Cross the square to the cottages and stocks on your left.

c. What is the third digit of the year on Sundial Cottage
d. How many external steps go up to the first floor of the building next to Sundial Cottage?

Continue your walk through the village past the lych gate to the post box by Walders Lane.

e. What is the time of the Saturday postal collection?

Go down Walders Lane. Note the Porter's Lodge on your left and straight ahead the oldest building in Bolsterstone, Castle Cottage.

f. What is the number of the last cottage on Walders Lane?

At the end of Walders Lane, turn left and cross the road to Waypoint 2, the information board near the public toilets on Stone Moor Road.

g. How many Parking areas are shown on the map?
h. What is the number of days each year a farmer can suspend the access rights to his land?
j. What percentage of the country does the public now have access to on foot?

Now walk back along the road to the Church and the large sycamore tree. Enter the churchyard through the small gate (unfortunately dogs are not allowed) and find the Bolsterstone Window, Waypoint 3.

k. You will pass the grave of the Garside family. What was the combined ages of John and Ben when they died?
m. How many faces in the Bolsterstone window? They can be counted from here as the church may not be open.

You now have all the information you need to work out the final co-ordinates, N53 A.BCD, W001 E.FGH, where:

A = h,
B = d - e,
C = k - m,
D = a - g,
E = b x j,
F = a,
G = c,
H = f.

The final cache is within the village. It is easily accessible from the roadside, so please do not enter any private property. The owners of the property by the cache site know about it. I hope you have enjoyed exploring Bolsterstone.

Congratulations to jewelsap77 and mark.d for achieving their first FTF.
