A traditional cache in a place that might literally be crawling with people. Not for little kids. And, unfortunately, not handicap accessible, sorry.
Memorial Park is pretty much my definition of what a nice park should be in a small town. Ball fields, BBQ pits, play areas and some nice grassy areas. Also, it has tennis court and they are building a pool.
The park also has within it that which give it its name, a Veteran's Memorial. I think that this memorial is kind of interesting because it was originally erected in 1926 to honor Albany's World War veterans, meaning WWI. Hundreds of thousands of Americans sent overseas in one of the stupidest wars of all time. When this cache was placed, there was exactly one WWI veteran left, Florence Green, an English nurse. She was 110. There was also a Polish veteran, Josef Kowalski, who, although he didn't fight in WWI, was fighting at the same time in the Polish-Soviet Union war. He was 111 and Poland's oldest man. Both of them have since died. People with direct memory of this time are almost completely gone. So, as you are looking for this cache, take some time and think about the "dough boys" in the trenches.
The cache itself is a small plastic cylinder. I looked around for a good long time to find a place that I didn't think would be found and there was precious little that I was satisfied with. So, this one is slightly more inaccessible than most. But it is in plain sight, if you look in the right place.
Congrats to mini cacher in a close win over Berkeley Boomers for FTF (or at least FTL).
