Geocache Description:

NGATI IRA MEMORIAL STONE

Along SH 2 on the plains before you enter the Waioeka Gorge, you will find a small memorial stone outside a Highway guardrail.

There is a parking opportunity close to the gate of the gas valve complex behind the guardrail.

This is the Memorial Stone

At the junction of Pile Road is a memorial stone erected by the Ngati Ira people in memory of their people killed in the fighting in 1865. On the black marble stone, it mentions New Zealand's only cavalry charge.

A bigger memorial of that fighting for those who have fallen is in the Opotiki cemetery.
The cache is a key hide and has got only a log sheet.

You will need to bring your own writing stick.
