Geocache Description:

A cache very near Tonbridge Methodist Church. Limited car parking is available. Please note this cache is not on church grounds.

Tonbridge Methodist Church was formed in July 1990 by the uniting of the congregations of the former East Street and Higham Wood churches. The present church building, adjacent to the former Higham Wood church was opened for worship at the end of January 1993 and formally dedicated in April 1993.

Methodism started in Tonbridge in 1802 and met in five different locations until the “New Wesleyan Chapel” in East Street was opened in 1872 on the site of a previous chapel. At that time East Street was known as Swan Lane. From 1872 to 1889 the Tonbridge church was part of the Tunbridge Wells circuit but in 1889 a separate Tonbridge Circuit was formed.

In the 1960s it was realised that there was a need for a place of worship in the north end of the town. The Higham Wood church was opened in November 1965 with a nucleus of members from East Street transferring their membership to the new church.

During the 1980s it was believed that a stronger witness could be made if the two existing churches joined together. Particularly, it was felt that there was a huge need for the church to become more involved in the community in the neighbourhood surrounding the Higham Wood church. The foundation stone for the new Tonbridge Methodist Church was laid in September 1992.

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let sadexploration know first so they can keep track of the churches, numbers and names to avoid duplication
