The San Antonito Cemetery is located just north of the intersection of SR 14 with SR 306, Frost Road, and at another beautiful old and historical church.
This San Antonito Catholic Mission Church, AKA Senor de Mapimi Mission Church, is serviced by the Holy Child Parish in Tijeras. The church and cemetery were established ca 1885. Most of the lumber to build the church came from the old mission church in San Pedro, near Golden to the north.
The church was dedicated to Senor de Mapimi (Christ on the Cross). The crucifix of Senor de Mapimi was donated by a lady coming from Mapimi, Mexico, a small mining town in northern Mexico.
In 1715, during the procession on Holy Thursday with the Santo, the faithful of Mapimi, Mexico, were attacked by Indians. Most of the people were killed and the church was destroyed. A small group managed to escape taking the Santo of Senor de Mapimi with them.
The Santo of Senor de Mapimi was used for processions during fiestas at San Antonito. Unfortunately, it was stolen from the church in 1973 and was never found. Now a smaller crucifix is used for the processions for the church's September fiesta.
