Charityuk: So sorry, I just haven't had time to get up there and replace this. The walk is that bit too far for my puppy.

Geocache Description:

Caesar's Well is a natural spring that lies in a hollow towards the western edge of Wimbledon Common. It has been in use for thousands of years, demonstrated by the discovery of Neolithic arrowheads and knives close by.

In the 18th century it was kown as Robin Hood Well, and the water was so pure it was thought to have medicinal properties. In 1829 it was encased in brick. Nowadays, round it is a circle of 12 large granite blocks, put there by Sir Henry Peak MP in 1872, who had just helped to save the Common from enclosure. This is surrounded by a number of Austrian pines, also planted in the 1870s.

In 1911 the spring dried up, for no obvious reason, so a boring was made and a standpipe installed. The water now issues from this into a granite cistern, from where it flows into Beverly Brook and eventually into the Thames. It has ever dried up since, even in 1976, although the flow was then reduced to one third of its normal rate. The well itself is now filled with black sludge.

There is no connections with Julius Caesar and it is highly unlikely that he ever visited the area!

The cache is a cliplock box inside a camo bag. When placed it contained logbook and pencil, various trinkets, a First To Find badge and a pink unicorn trackable, being released into the wild by my 6 year old daughter.

Parking is available at the end of Sunset Road. Not wheelchair accessible, and it would be very difficult with a pushchair. Fine for young children (our 6 and 3 year olds helped place it) but obviously take care around the well itself and beware of nettles and brambles!

Placed with the kind permission of the Rangers.
