Geocache Description:

All aboard the Hobbit Train! Multi-part cache hidden within Goat Hill Junction. Free train rides on the third Saturday and Sunday of every month from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Goat Hill Junction is home to the Orange County Model Engineers (OCME), a club that maintains and operates one-eighth scale trains and railroads. It is located on Placentia Avenue, across the street from Fairview Park in Costa Mesa. The land is public property but the city of Costa Mesa has granted permission to OCME to use it to pursue their hobby and provide fun rides to children (and adults) of all ages.

I recommend that you start off at this trailhead with the following coordinates: N33° 40.115, W117° 56.104. You should be able to park within 50 feet of this trail (corner of Canary and Tanager Drives). Terrain is mostly on a single-track trail through gently rolling hills easily accessible by young and old alike. (During the summer, the grass gets up to about knee high but the trail should still be visible.) Of course, dogs, hobbits, wizards, elves, and dwarves are welcome but please leave the evil Orcs at home. Total distance on foot to and from the caches would be about a mile.

You can also park across the street on Fairview Park. Or you can park at the Goat Hill Junction parking lot, which would be open during the dates and times that they are offering free train rides to the public. Of course, you would have to be much more discrete when doing a cache hunt during these hours.

The first cache contains the coordinates for the second and final cache. It is a yellow cylindrical container with a white cap measuring approximately 3” long by 1” in diameter. Once you find it, twist the cap open and you can take one of the strips of paper with a printout of the coordinates for the second cache.

The second cache is an oval-shaped, cylindrical metal container. It measures approximately 6.5” long and 6” wide (about a quart size). When first hidden, it contained the following:

  • 4-wheel ATV (die cast model)
  • Tonka Police Assault Vehicle
  • Piglet (from Winnie the Pooh) Pen
  • Chicago Bulls Keychain
  • Miniature Skateboard
  • Batman and Superman Collectable Card Game
  • Yoda (he is, after all, a Hobbit)
  • Disney Trivia Mini Book
  • Compact Address Book with etching of Sled Dog Team
  • Barbie Puzzle
  • Floating Compass
  • Leather Encased Coleman Pocketknife
  • Mardi Gras Beads
  • Carabiner Keychain
  • Ensanada Bike Patch
  • Ring (One Ring to Rule Them All ---- well, not quite…..)
  • Air Force Pin
  • English Two Pence
  • Philippine Two Peso Coin
  • Log book and pen
  • IMPORTANT NOTE: Please do not push down hard when closing the second cache container!!! Doing so may make it difficult for the next cacher to open it. Note that it has a latch mechanism but there is definitely NO NEED to latch it shut.

Thank you for playing!!! (CC: 8/31/02, 9/28/02)
