USS Blakely:
In 1818 Blakely township was formed from a providence of Greenfield township. Olyphant had been part of Blakely township until 1869. The name Blakely came from Captain Johnston Blakely, who was a naval hero in the war of 1812.He was the commanding officer of the American ship called the "WASP". He was known for his bravery and leadership in a battle on Lake Erie in 1814, as he successfully engaged the British sloops, Avon & Reindeer. Captain Blakely was lost at sea off the Azores during a storm in 1814.
