Geocache Description:

Geocache in memory of passengers and crew of an Il-18 airliner, which crashed on the 27th of April, 1974, killing all 118 aboard.

Civil aviation is considered to be the most reliable and safe way of transportation. But sometimes, very rarely, a flight results in accident. Accidents are mostly occur due to human mistakes and sometimes because of technical failures. In that flight the latter reason prevailed. Strong vibration and fire in the engine No. 4 began right after takeoff. The plane lost control on final, crashed and burned 3.5 km from the Pulkovo airport in a meadow next to the railroad in attempt of emergency landing. The crew performed the standard landing pattern, which delayed the flight. The destruction of the engine`s turbine disc of the third stage of the compressor. Loss of control has occurred because of an asymmetrical flap retraction, as traction of the right flap at the time of their release burned off. No. 4 engine vibration was noticed in the previous flight, but after checking it was decided to release the aircraft in flight. A week before the crash, the 'Fire in the engine' sensor triggered and the captain performed an emergency landing without following the approach chart, for which he received a dressing down from his superiors. Then the sensor reading was false.
