Hidden over the new bridge crossing the old train tracks, we now have a quicker way to get from one side of Whangarei to the other.
Please be careful around here especially with children as it backs on to the road.
Easy park and grab. Keep your eye out behind you as the sports field over the road might see you.
The aim of the project
This new route will divert traffic from the Commerce Street and Railway Avenue route and will avoid the roundabout at the intersection of Tarewa Road, Walton Street and Bank Street.
Together with the new crossing of the Hatea River, completion of this project will provide a more convenient and efficient route and help to ease congestion in the centre of Whangarei.
The project involved
a 600 metre long new arterial road to connect Porowini Ave to Okara Drive.
a new 28-metre long bridge crossing the Whangarei rail yard.
the construction of fill embankments for the bridge to a height of about 8 metres.
a new two-lane roundabout at the connection with Okara Drive.
a 3-metre wide shared walking and cycle path from Okara Drive to Kaka Street with a pedestrian link to Rawhiti Street.
a 20-metre diameter rail turntable to replace the old turning triangle.
