Geocache Description:

Important Note. This cache may not be accessible outside of daylight hours.

It is accessible from Furst Street or via a footpath in Sadler Road.

My personal recommendation is to park in Sadler Road
N 52 38.920
W 001 55.215
and walk through the passage.

The most important era in the history of Ogley was 1967-1984 when a couple of budding young geocachers called BaggieWhite & All Weather Cacher frequented these parts ;-)

The area where the cache is hidden was a playground for all the kids in the surrounding the area (including myself) and has very happy memories for me.

The road leading to the entrance to this area (Furst Street) used to be a dirt track lane when I was a kid and was used for bike racing throughout the school holidays.

This then extended to building ramps for all us budding Evel Kneivel wannabies, even jumping over our mates who were brave enough to sacrifice themselves for the cause.

The field itself was the home to Ogley Working Mens Club football team who my dad (Bill from BillnWen) was their trainer for a while, but the most important games of football were played here every evening and all weekend with jumpers for goalposts.

If you are one of the kids who played down here in this era I'd love to hear from you.

For those of you interested in the other history of Ogley, here it is.

AD 878 - Ocga's Leah (meaning Ogca's Wood) was first recorded, there are no records of who Ocga was.

AD 994 - Oggingtun (Ogley Hay) was given by Wulfrun to the monks at Wolverhampton. This is the first record of the name and probably means Ogca's Town, the latter form Ogley means Ocga's Ley (or pasture).

11th Century - Domesday Book records Ogley as waste

12th Century - "A certain wood which is called Hogeley as far as Watling Street" conveyed to William Rufus of Walsall.

1280 - Cannock Forest extended as a royal hunting ground as far South as Walsall. Ogley becomes one of the "hays" or administrative divisions of Cannock Forest.

1292 - Uggeley mentioned in the Close Rolls

1300 Oggeleye recorded in a perambulation of Cannock Forest. The area was uninhabited apart from deer and wolves.

1316 - Two foresters appointed at Ogley

1431 - Ogley recorded as containing 2,700 acres

1567 - Part of Ogley given by the crown to the family of Lord Stafford

1703 - Shrewsbury Coach held up at Brownhills by highwayman. (My Auntie May claimed she saw the ghost of Dick Turpin on the Chester Road near Stonall, so maybe there is something in this after all)

1765 - Ogley Hay sold to Richard Gildart who stocked it as a rabbit warren, hence the Warreners Arms at the corner of Ogley Road and the High Street

1784 - Another stagecoach robbery at Brownhills (looks like Auntie May was right)

1794 - Extension of the Wyrley and Essington Canal authorised from Birchills through Pelsall & Ogley Hay to Huddlesford

1797 - Canal Opens (bet we couldn't build a canal that quick today)

1811 - Population of Brownhills = 8

1821 - Population of Brownhills - 23

1834 Ogley Hay enclosed, principal landowner Phineas Hussey (hence the Hussey Arms)

1841 - Population 222

1849 - Brownhills train station opens on the Walsall to Lichfield line

1851 - St James Parish Church opens

1861 - Population 1,357

1871 - Population 1,824

1881 - Population 2,040

1894 - Brownhills Urban District formed comprising Ogley Hay, Shire Oak, Walsall Wood and Norton Canes

1900 - Population of urban district = 12,500

1915 - Population of Urban District 16,852

1954 - Ogley - Huddlesford section of canal is closed (you can see the new bridge over the M6 toll that is in place with nothing either side, in the hope that this extension is reinstated one day)

1965 - Walsall - Lichfield line passenger services withdrawn. My mom (Wen from BillnWen can't get to work at Crabtree's Walsall by train anymore)

1966 - Baggiewhite moves to Ogley Road

1984 - Baggiewhite leaves Ogley Road

2/3/2011 - Baggiewhite and All Weather Cacher return to do the local caches and reminisce about the area.

3/10/2011 - Baggiewhite returns to place Ogley's first geocache
