You'll need a Canoe Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Cathy: Groundspeak has been contacted by a conservationist, who has removed the cache. Evidently the hollow tree is a sensitive nesting area for insect eating bats and should not be disturbed. Sorry, but we have to archive this cache.

Geocache Description:

The cache is located in the lake, you will need a canoe or a boat to recover the cache. The resort does hire canoes and the lake is an interesting paddle.

FTF will find an interesting stubbie cooler to keep.

Lake Bennett is a small artificial freshwater lake located 80 km south of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia. The lake is set in 4.45 square kilometres of tropical bushland.

The Lake was originally built in the 1970s to irrigate farming land. In the 1980s it became very popular for recreational activities. Water skiing was very popular on the Lake but this was banned in the learly 1990’s due to the damage it was doing to the dam wall. The Lake has been stocked with barramundi since 2004.

The water level of the lake may affect accessing this cache. The cache was placed when the water level was low. A higher water level should make accessing the cache easier.

The cache is a 90mm PVC tube about 30cm long.

Our plan was to place the cache in one of the old dead trees in the southern end of the Lake. Unfortunately none of the dead trees in the south end of the Lake had a big enough hollow for the size of the cache. I guess we should have brought along a couple of different sized caches.

In the end, the only tree with a big enough hollow was in the northern end of the Lake, and the big problem with that is that it’s one of the only trees in the water at the Northern end of the lake, the only other tree at the Northern end has a great big crocodile trap tied to it!

Can you please leave some feed back in your comments when you find the cache about how it’s going? I’m concerned that it will attract some attention from Muggles as it may stand out a bit. Hopefully it is also above the wet season flood level.
