The Withers building stands on the highest point between Rock Hill and the sea coast, and the original building was constructed in 1891 by Rock Hill Presbyterian Church as a preparatory school for boys. Eventually the building was purchased by Winthrop and became a model school for the training of teachers. In 1912 the cornerstone for the west wing of the present building was laid. The building's design was modeled after England's Hampton Court Palace using eclectic Tudor-Gothic architecture. It was officially named The Withers Building in 1960 and for many years it was known as Withers/WTS (Winthrop Training School). The Training School was closed in 1965 and in 1981 Withers was placed on the National Register of Historical Places. Withers now houses The Richard Riley School of Education This cache is placed with permission from Winthrop and meets the requirements set forth in the Winthrop University Geocaching Guidelines. It is located close to the Withers Building and you are encouraged to take the time to look around this unusual and historical old building as well as the grounds and other building on Winthrop's campus
