Geocache Description:

This earthcache leads you to one of the most beautiful spots on Madeira island - the lagoon of the 25 fountains.

Note: Any "found" logs from users that have not received my log permission after sending correct answers to the questions will be deleted without further comment!

A ilha da Madeira é de origem vulcânica. É parte de uma série de ilhas oceânicas de origem vulcânica que datam do Mioceno (~ 20 milhões de anos atrás), formadas a partir de um ponto quente na crosta da Terra, na Placa Tectônica Africana.
A paisagem visível, hoje, é resultado de vários períodos de transformação geológica com as fases de fortes atividades vulcânicas formando dois maciços na região central da ilha.

Devido à inúmeras fases vulcânicas, a ilha é constituída por uma grande variedade de materiais. Muitas falhas densas, basáltica e traquito, pode ser observadas por toda a paisagem.
A lagoa que vai visitar situa-se no "Paul da Serra", que foi formada por derrames basálticos que correspondem ao último período de atividade vulcânica na ilha da Madeira (cerca de 0,5 - 0,2 milhões de anos).

Basalto é uma rocha extrusiva vulcânica. "Extrusivas" significa que magma quente voou para fora (extrusão) de dentro da terra para a superfície , quando lava explode violentamente na atmosfera para voltar a cair na superfície, como piroclastos ou tufos (formação de rocha intrusiva). Basalto pertence aos tipos de rocha mais comum no mundo e é o mais dominante em grandes províncias ígneas (LIP).
Além disso, não só pode ser encontrada na Terra, mas também na Lua, Marte e Vênus!

Para ser capaz de reivindicar o cache, tem que examinar a parede da lagoa e responder às seguintes perguntas através do meu perfil:
1) Na parede pode ver 6 zonas de diferentes materiais. Explicar como se forrmam essas zonas.
2) Em que época geológica se formou o fluxo de basalto?
3) Estime a espessura da camada vermelha. O que pensa, que terá dado uma côr diferente a essa camada?
4) Ao registrar o cache envie uma foto sua e do seu GPS em frente à lagoa

Como chegar à lagoa:
Do estacionamento siga a estrada barrada até ao posto do guarda florestal ; "Posto Florestal Rabaçal" (Etapa 1). Pode caminhar por essa estrada, muito íngreme, leva cerca de 25 minutos para chegar ao posto florestal. Ou, pode esperar por trás da barreira pelo minibus, que o leva para baixo (e mais importante: trá-lo também para cima ) por uma pequena importância.
Do posto florestal os sinais "PR 6 25 Fontes" levam-nos a lagoa. A caminhada total é de cerca de 3 horas e 9 km.

Nota: O sinal GPS na lagoa é fraco e a precisão das coordenadas é baixa. O caminho leva-o lá ...


The island of Madeira is of volcanic origin. It is part of a series of oceanic volcanic islands that date back to the Miocene (~ 20 million years ago), constructed from a hotspot in the Earth's crust of the African Tectonic Plate.
The landscape as seen today is a result of several geological transformation periods with phases of strong volcanic activities forming 2 massifs in the central region of the island.

Due to the numerous volcanic phases, the island consists of a large variety in materials. Lots of dense faults, basaltic and trachyte, can be spotted all over the landscape.
The lagoon you are going to visit is situated in the "Paul da Serra" massif, which was formed by basaltic flows that correspond to the last period of volcanic activity on Madeira (around .5-.2 millions of years).

Basalt is an extrusive volcanic rock. "Extrusive" means hot magma has flown out (extruded) from inside the earth onto its surface whereas lava explodes violently into the atmosphere to fall back on the surface as pyroclastics or tuff (intrusive rock formation). Basalt belongs to the most common rock types in the world and is most dominant in large igneous provinces (LIP).
Furthermore it cannot only be found on earth but also on Moon, Mars and Venus!

To be able to claim the cache, you have to examine the wall of the lagoon and answer the following questions through my profile:
1) In the wall you can see 6 different material zones. Explain how these zones have been formed
2) In which geological epoch has the basaltic flow been formed?
3) Estimate the thickness of the red layer. What do you think has given this layer a different color?
4) When logging the cache please submit a photo of you and your GPS in front of the lagoon


How to get to the lagoon:
From the parking follow the barred road down to the forester house "Posto Florestal Rabacal" (Stage1). You can walk down this road, which is very steep and takes about 25 minutes to reach the forester house. Or you may wait behind the barrier for the minibus, which will take you down there (and more important: up again later) for a small fee.
From the forester house the track signs "PR 6 25 Fontes" will lead you to the lagoon. The overall hike is about 3 hrs and 9 km.

Note: GPS reception at the lagoon is poor, so is accuracy of the coordinates. The path will lead you there...
