The Metropolitan Cattle Market (later Caledonian Market) was built by the City of London Corporation and opened in June 1855 by Prince Albert. The market was supplementary to the meat market at Smithfield . The market originally covered 30 acres. On market days in excess of 15,000 animals could be traded. The market was enclosed by cast iron railings, the columns of which were topped with cast iron heads of the animals traded. The railings remain but the heads were removed many years ago.Four grand public-houses were built at the corners of the market, providing accommodation and entertainment for those visiting. Today, three of the four remain and, with the beautiful clock tower, these are listed structures.
The markets finally closed in 1963.The northern part of the site was redeveloped by the GLC . The southern part forms Caledonian Park. The whole estate is being regenerated with the original blocks being demolished and replaced with a new layout of streets. The park also hosts London’s first Darwin Trail with slate markers linking quotations from Charles Darwin’s writings to the flora and fauna found in the park.
My childhood memory of the market is of an absolutely vast flat area, dominated by the huge gigantic clock tower and four busy colourful pubs.
