This is the 11 in a series of caches dedicated to my two favorite hobbies. Geocaching and Birding. Both require you to go get out of the house and do some walking. While out geocaching I easily get distracted by birds that I encounter, but it makes the experience that much more enjoyable. Each of these caches are placed in an area where there is a heavy concentration of birds or a certain species of birds that I think people would enjoy learning more about and seeing first-handed. So if you have a pair of binoculars, bring them along with your pen for some close up views.
This cache is dedicated to the Barred Owl.
Living so close to a major aiport is a great place to live for a birder. You wouldn't think so, but there is still so much untouched land that the D/FW airport owns, that it is a haven for Birds of Prey. Sometimes while driving on Valley View or Airfield drive we come across a hawk or an owl. This is the case here. One morning around midnight me and the wife were driving home and we spotted a owl sitting on a telephone wire. Just so we were not mistaken we did a U-turn and sure enough there he was. Well soon as we stopped close to him, he took off. Man they are so big and really scary if you run in to one at night. I really hope everyone gets a chance to see one.
This owl is a large owl with a round head and no ear tufts. Their bellies are whitish with dark streaks. Barred Owls have a very distinct sound. Listen for a "who-cooks-for-you, who-cooks-for-you-all." Owls nest in cavities in trees, so I would suggest bringing a ladder with you.
The area around the cache is part of the "Estelle Historic School Site." There is also a graveyard close by that I visited while I was placing the cache. Who would have known there was a graveyard there. The "Harrington" name is the family that donated the property for the Estelle School. The two story building (which is no longer there) had a schoolhouse on first floor and Masonic lodge on second. For all the information you could ever want on the Estelle School and surrounding property be sure to check out the nearby cache by GeoNutz and Cachews "Estelle School" (GC33QR8).
Congratz to all for the FTF!
