Geocache Description:

Church Micro 4419...Harlington

This cache has been placed to bring you to the Church of St Mary The Virgin, Harlington.

This cache is now a bitamin tube. The cache only contains a log - you are a geocacher, you should have a writing implement! Please note that the final cache is located outside the churchyard and is NOT accessible from inside the churchyard. Please park sensibly and safely in the village.

Cache relocated 29/10/24. If solved prior to this, please message me or recalculate the final GZ. Values of A to J remain unaltered.

The church of St. Mary The Virgin is built of hard chalk, known as 'clunch', which has been quarried at Totternhoe near Dunstable since Roman times. Herlingdone is mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book. The early church was most probably wooden with a thatched roof. The Normans certainly built a stone church here since there is evidence of Norman buttresses beneath the present ground level. Sometime before 1190 Phillipus de Herlingdone was St Mary's ordained clerk. The present church celebrated it's 700th birthday in 2006. Later the Canons (monks who were also priests) of Dunstable appropriated the revenues from Harlington for the support of their Priory.

Please take time to explore the peace and tranquility of the churchyard. Please be respectful in the church and its grounds. When I visited the church to place the micro, I discovered a historical story that interested me. To find the location of the final cache, you will need to visit the published coordinates and discover the same story.

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
