Xaniqw (pronounced za-neek-wa) is the lenape language word
for squirrel. Wpunkwxaniwq (wee-pun-kwa-za-nee-kwa) is a grey
squirrel.
The Lenape are an algonquian group of native americans from
the northeastern woodlands. They are also called Delaware indians.
At the time of European contact in the 16th and 17th centuries, the
Lenape lived in roughly the area around and between the Delaware
and lower Hudson rivers. This encompassed what is now New Jersey,
eastern Pennsylvania, the north shore of Delaware, and southeastern
New York, particularly the lower Hudson valley, Upper New York Bay,
Staten Island, and western Long Island. Trade with the Dutch
initially thrived, but a combination of the decline in the beaver
population, disease, and conflict with settlers and the Iroquoian
speaking Susquehannock soon pushed the Lenape westwards.
Today’s populations reside primarily in Oklahoma, Wisconsin,
and Canada.
This cache is a decon hidden within Cascade Lake Park, a quiet
little area in the town of Warwick, NY, along the New Jersey
border. It is open to all users. Parking is at the end of Cascade
Lake Road, an offshoot of Cascade Road. There are several marked
trails. The light blue trail heads southeast, past the dam, and
eventually heads uphill to terminate at the Appalachian Trail, with
a fantastic view of Greenwood Lake. The red trail heads south along
the lake and river side to a foot bridge crossing the river. From
there, a woods road continues south to the Appalachian Trail again
in New Jersey.
