Join TT and I on a lovely little walk around the west end area of Witney out into the lovely village of Poffley End that I drive through each day on the way to work and onto Hailey and back again. Put out to commemorate the move of the family home from one side of Witney to the other in 2011, please enjoy the Witney Westend Wander!
Series Description :
To acknowledge the reliance we Geocachers have on technology, a personal love of mine, and the WWW acronym of this series commemorating my move to the west of Witney, each one has been named after a particular Geocaching website that we find useful, interesting or informative.
Series Info:
A series of traditional caches in a walk approximately three miles long and which should take about two and a half hours to complete. There are twelve caches in this series in total, starting from and returning to the parking opposite the Canon Pool Service Station on Hailey Road where any refreshments needed before or after the walk can be found. However, be aware, Witney Community Primary School is very close so I would avoid school drop off and pick up times.
Also between #4 and #7 it can be very wet, almost like a stream at times, so if it's been raining recently you may need wellingtons!
The series is almost entirely flat and uses fairly well marked Public Footpaths some of which you will see are ancient roads, you also spend a little time on The Palladian Way. Should be okay for dog cachers but there are a few styles you will have to carry your pet over and for that reason I’m afraid isn’t buggy or disability friendly. It is a great family walk out for little cachers too though and although there are some fields with horses in they showed no interest in us.
The route takes you into the villages and there are a couple of bits by the road but there are footpaths alongside at each point - please take care but it is safe.
This Cache:
www.geocaching.com - Well we had to start with this one! The main website for all Geocachers worldwide.
From the suggested parking opposite the Service Station cross the main road at the zebra crossing and turn right, walk down and you will see the Footpath sign to Poffley End leading through a gap and alongside the service station. Walk into the field and you should turn left here but you need to carry on a little way at first to find this one then return and take the path heading nearly north.
This is the first of the series and is be a three inch camouflaged click-lock box with the usual contents!. PLEASE - do not touch the wall
After this cache follow the path north and into the trees, go through the trees, the public footpath continues directly across the field.
