Geocache Description:

THIS IS A BONUS CACHE for the "Long Ago But Not Far Away – Fairview" historical series. The cache is NOT located at the posted coordinates. To get the actual coords for this cache, you must collect number clues from inside the containers of other caches in this series. Read details below.

General rules: Anyone may log the caches in this series, but kids (12 years old and under) can earn special awards. Kids logging any 4 of the 6 caches in either the Long Ago But Not Far Away - Fairview series or the Long Ago But Not Far Away - Spring Mountain series and emailing the answers to the Kids' Answer Sheet will receive a certificate and a special prize for each series.

In addition, both kids and adults should collect the number clues from inside the containers as they visit the caches in the series. The clues will help you find this “Fairview Bonus” cache. The same method will be used to locate the Spring Mountain Bonus cache in the Long Ago But Not Far Away – Spring Mountain series. Fairview clue cards look like this:

Kids earning both the Fairview and the Spring Mountain certificates and logging both bonus caches will receive a special geocoin. Multiple children in a family may each receive their own awards, but each child requesting an award must have been present during all the cache hunts. Make sure you print out the Kids' Answer Sheet for Fairview before beginning this project!

To claim your award(s), click “Spring Mountain Community Club” just below the cache title and send an email including:
(1) the names of the caches you found along with the answers to their questions,
(2) your name and caching name, and
(3) your age.

(Information will be used to verify your qualification and print your certificate and will then be deleted. Parents, please contact us if you prefer not to share this information.)

Fairview Bonus

This is a bonus cache. The cache is NOT located at the posted coordinates. To get the actual coords for this cache, you must collect numbers from inside the containers of other caches in this series. There are six caches in this series (listed above), but only four of the six contain number clues. Clues look like this:

When you find number clues, insert them into this puzzle:

N 35º 30. A B 9, W 82º 22. C D 3

To check your answer, use this checksum: A + B + C + D = XY; X + Y = 6

Please park safely out of the road.

This cache hunt will take you to two locations in the Fairview area. One is developed, and one is rural. You are not required to stop at the posted coords, but it makes a nice contrast to the final location.

At the posted coordinates, imagine yourself living in the town of Fairview during the 1800s. What would you see? Instead of a modern grocery store, post office, bank, and school along a five-lane paved highway, you would be seeing a collection of small houses (and their accompanying outhouses), a church (1806), an "improved" dirt road leading to Asheville and Rutherfordton (1820s), an inn on down the road (1834), and a small general store which also provided "general delivery" mail service.

The solved puzzle will take you to a view much more like what would have been seen in the Fairview area in the 1800s. Enjoy the "fair view!"
