Leitchville was gazette as a township in 1929 and was named after Duncan Leitch, manager of Gunbower station.
Leitchville is the centre of the Ganawarra Shire dairy industry and was home to the Murray Goulburn factory (formerly Kraft). The dairy industry is the backbone of the Shire and in June 2006 the factory was producing 140 tonne of bulk cheddar cheese a day and employing 120 staff. The factory closed early in 2010. The factory site is still used for some transport and field operations, but essentially remains empty. An article in the Riverine Herald reported that the most of the 18 or 19 employees who lived in town have found employment in the area. Even though the town would prefer to see something new go into the factory, the townfolk have got on with their lives and prefer not to dwell in the past.

The nearby Murray River is popular for camping and fishing.
Other agricultural enterprises are pork production, and hay and stock feed production.
