Nice stroll, might be a bit gusty later in the year. Accessible by all.
The name Alness signifies "brook of the headland;" and alludes to the promontory named Alness Point. This was an important trading link with the south and evidence is still around the firth, in the form of storehouses “girnels”, one stood at the end of Alness point until 2007 when it became unsafe and was demolished.
Alness Point has maintained its importance, throughout the years, the American Navy took over Dalmore Distillery during the First World War and used it as a mine base. What is known locally as the ‘Yankee Pier’ still sticks out into the firth.
Flying boats began training at Alness during the 1930’s. The Sunderlands and the Catalinas were based at Alness, with repair and maintenance situated at Alness Point. The Officers were based at Dalmore House; this area became a very busy strategic point for training and North Sea surveillance.
During WW2, however, it was a very different story, no longer just training and surveillance; there were active duties, as the battle for air supremacy raged over Europe. Alness Point was an important military base; close to the natural deep harbour of the Cromarty Firth and this made it an ideal base for RAF flying boats.
The Base is gone now, just remnants of what was there can be seen, but there is a memorial at Alness Point Business Park, “to the memory of all who served there”.
Thank to Dalmore Distillery Manager for allowing the placement of this cache.
