Geocache Description:

A magnetic nano cache near a piece of artwork commemorating the Cowlairs Railway Works and the regeneration of the local community.

The railway industry in Springburn was a massive part of Glasgow's industrial past, and Cowlairs Railway Works (or Cowlairs Locomotive, Carriage and Wagon Works to give it its full title) was one of the largest railway manufacturing yards in the world.

The yard was built on Carlisle Street in 1841, and trains manufactured here were exported throughout the world - apparently some are even still running today!

As the era of heavy industry in Glasgow came to an end and jobs were lost, the surrounding area began to fall into decline. By the 1980s, the area was one of the poorest in the city and suffered from severe social problems.

Substantial regeneration has taken place since then, however, and the striking piece of metal artwork on the wall next to the cache location was commissioned in the early 2000s and designed by well known sculptor Andy Scott in conjunction with local residents.

The railway line and wheels mark the industrial heritage of the area, and above that the phoenix rising from the ashes signifies the regeneration and the aspirations that the community has for the future. Nods to Glasgow's coat of arms can also be seen - the tree, the bell, the bird and the fish.

This cache meets the urban placement guidelines.
