Geocache Description:

As you come to this cache location, just imagine coming through this area 160 years ago in a wagon trail bound for the Great Salt Lake Valley. As many as 60,000 Mormon pioneers as well as other pioneers bound for California, first in search for land, then in search for gold, passed by this spot.

In 1846 the infamous Donner Party passed by this spot and camped near this area on their way to California in search of rich farmland. The Donner Party was in this area in the middle of August making a slow progression towards the Great Salt Lake. They spend 3-4 days cutting a trail from present day Mormon Flat up to Big Mountain.

Then in 1847 the Mormon Vanguard party led by Brigham Young followed the road made by Mr. Reed and came to this same area in July of 1847. Norton Jacob, a member of the Vanguard party, had this to day about this area on 20 July 1847. "Started after 10 a.m. up this creek to the south. left Br Sherwood, he being verry sick to camp here with three waggons. found a good deal of labor to clear out the road notwithstanding it was cut through last simmer by Reed's company, they that were caught by the snows in the Calafornia mountains, & our Pioneers have done much & yet there is room for more labor. One of the Pioneers met us this morning & reports Br Pratt 7 miles ahead last night. made 7 1/4 miles & camped, for we found a letter from Br Pratt informing us that it is 11 miles over the mountain to a camping place."

The marker you will find at this location was placed by the National Park Service to tell the story of the Mormon Trail in this area. Please take a moment to walk through the path in the fence and out into the field. The original trail goes through this field. Also, please be respectful of the private property adjacent to this spot. The cache is a few feet through the walkway in the fence.

This cache has been placed by members of the Oregon-California Trails Association.
