This is part of a local series we have set up. We came across a similar series in the Lake District created by ‘The Smileys’ which we really enjoyed completing, and thought we would recreate a similar series in Derbyshire.
Swarkestone is situated 5 miles south of Derby and was the most southerly point reached by the advance guard of Bonnie Prince Charlies army in 1745, on their march to London. Swarkestone also saw battle in the Civil War when Sir John Gell routed the Cavaliers in 1643. Built in the 13th century and about a mile long, Swarkestone bridge has 17 arches only a few of which actually cross the River Trent, the rest passing over the low lying flood meadows of the river. The story goes that it was built by 2 sisters who saw their lovers drown whilst trying to cross the flooded meadows. At the northern end of the bridge are the remains of a chapel.
The cache is a small pot with room for small swaps and trackables. Please watch both Geokids and Geomutts, especially if you walk near to the bridge – the traffic is extremely fast here. There is a small pull-in for a cache and dash.
