Geocache Description:

The coordinates at the top of the page will take you to the starting point of the tour. There will be two more stops along the way, then you will calculate the numbers that will give you the final coordinates for the cache. The cache is located at N 41 09.ABC – W 081 21.DEF

Art Deco was a popular style of design in the 1920s and 1930s. Artists, architects, and designers used sleek and modern lines, as well as geometric shapes, to put their own spin on the classic styles of ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt, as well as utilizing African and Aztec traditions. They saw no reason why the Machine Age should not be beautiful as well as functional, with a symmetry all its own.

With two buildings funded by the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression and another built in the same style after World War II, Kent State University gives visitors a glimpse of this ornamental style.

Start your tour at Engleman Hall (N 41 09.115 – W 081 20.749). Here you can appreciate the patterned bricks and metal awning over the entryway, as well as the Art Deco letters that spell the building’s name above. There is a black box to the right as you face the door. How many letters make up the word written on it? Take that number, subtract 9, and call that A.

Now walk up the hill to Van Deusen Hall (N 41 09.031 – W 081 20.874). High on the wall are three plaques. Using the plaque on the right, count the number of paint brushes, add 1, and call that B.

Using the middle plaque, count the number of propellors on the middle plane nose (don't count them all!), subtract 4, and call that C.

Continue uphill to the end of the building, turn right, use the crosswalk, and follow the Esplanade to the left of the parking lot below. When you get to the sign for Kent Hall, turn left between the buildings and follow the drive to the back of McGilvrey Hall (N 41 09.020 – W 081 21.059). Using this plaque, count the number of stars below the moon, subtract 5, and call that D.

Continue to the front of the building and locate the two plaques above the doorway. How many animals do you see? Call that number E.

Walk downhill to the main entrance of McGilvrey where you will find the final group of plaques. Double the number of plaques and call that number F.

You now have all the information you need to calculate the final coordinates. You can do a quick check of your work before heading for the cache: A + B + C + D + E + F = 17. The cache is a magnetic nano, the log has room for your initials and the date only—please roll the log up when finished and place it in the cap before screwing it back on. Place the cache back exactly where you found it, safely tucked away.

I hope you enjoyed this tour—happy caching!
