Okiku Shrine
"Sarayashiki" is one of the famous Japanese ghost stories. An Okiku was killed by her faultfinding of breaking a dish. Her body was abandoned into a well. After that, the Okiku ghost appeared from the well to count the number of the dishes. There is more detail story in Himeji.
Story:
Aoyama Tessan who was a chief retainer of the Himeji castle attempted an assassination of Kodera Norimoto who was the lord of the castle. Okiku who was working in the castle noticed the plot and told the other retainer to bring the lord away. Although Aoyama failed in assassination, he occupied the castle and commanded his staff to search for the informer. The staff found Okiku as the informer. However, he killed her and abandoned her body in a well. After a while, the lord Kodera recovered his castle and heard the Okiku story. He prayed for her spirit and built a shrine which was located near the Jyunisyo shrine.

お菊神社
皿屋敷の物語は、お菊という女性が皿を紛失したことを咎められて謀殺され、夜な夜な井戸から幽霊になって現れ皿の枚数を数えるというもので、浄瑠璃や歌舞伎、落語の題材になっています。日本人で知らない人はいないのではないでしょうか。姫路に伝わるお菊の物語は以下のようなものです。
あらすじ:
永正年間、姫路城の家老だった青山鉄山は下克上で城主小寺則職の暗殺を企てていました。これを知った女中のお菊は他の忠臣に伝え城主を逃がしました。暗殺には失敗しましたが青山氏は城を占有しました。青山氏は密告者を探すよう部下に命じました。部下はお菊が密告者であることを突き止めますがお菊を殺してしまいました。そして城内の井戸にその死体を投げ入れました。その後、小寺氏が青山氏を倒し城を取り返しました。小寺氏はお菊の話を聞き、供養するとともに、お菊がよく詣でていたという十二所神社の中にお菊を『お菊大明神』として祀りました。
