Geocache Description:

The Whangaparapara Jetty cache is located near (2 minutes walk) the Jetty. You will need to walk along a track that follows the edge of the harbour. Keep an eye on small children. The cache is located 4 metres off the track.

Whangaparapara Habour is located South-western quarter of Great Barrier Island. Whangaparapara was settled by Europeans in 1840 who were logging Kauri. Whanagaparapara become home to the Southern Hemisphere's largest timber mill. At its peak over 200 people lived in and around Whangaparapara. Timber milled at Whangaparapara was exported as far as Europe and the United States. Logging continued until the late 1920s. However, the first commercial industry to have a presence at Whangaparapara was whaling. During 1957 a whaling station was setup at Whangaparapara on the opposite side of the harbour from the jetty. The station slipway is still there after operations ceased in 1962. The slipway was used for temporary catch storage by a fishing company until 2007 when the company ceased operations on Great Barrier Island. It is now home to a local boat builder.

Whangaparapara now has a permanent population of approximately 30 full time residents. A few holiday homes are located around the harbour. The Harbour is very popular with boaties during the summer months of December and January. The Northern side of the Habour is owned by the Crown and is managed by Department of Conservation (“DoC”). A small DoC camping ground called the “Bowling Green” is located on the North-eastern edge of the Harbour. The Harbour is the starting or ending point of a number of exceptionally good bush walks. The Great Barrier Lodge is located at Whangaparapara Harbour, there is petrol and diesel facilities and a public phone booth at the Jetty.
