Geocache Description:

Welcome to Rat Island. You shouldn't find any of them on the island though. The water surrounding GZ is a Mangrove graveyard. There are numerous trunks breaching the surface so don't head straight for gz from the water. I suggest landing on the island to the right of GZ, closer to Limestone island, though be careful as the some of the sand can be soft and MiniMaxy sunk when she jumped off the boat 20cm deep in sand.

Another small island in the Whangarei Harbor is a fairly uninteresting little spot. The island is mainly mangrove trees with some grasses. When we stopped on the island there were a few shore birds running around. Please don't go running around too much on the island as who knows if there are any nests on or around the area. Watch your step.

The only information I could find on the island is from back in 1913 on November 3. A cement laden ketch Tarawera ran aground on the island and got stuck.
